Pelvic floor explained

What are the pelvic floor muscles and why are they so important?

Our pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles that lie underneath our pelvic organs, and run from the pubic area to the anal area/tail bone. Their role includes; support of pelvic organs, control of the sphincters of our bladder and bowel, sexual function, childbirth and posture.

If there is weakness or any other problem with our pelvic floor muscles then one may suffer from incontinence, pain, difficulty on sexual function and toileting problems.

Our pelvic floor like other muscles in our body can be consciously controlled therefore we have the ability to train and strengthen these muscles much like our arm or leg muscles.

For this reason physiotherapy is so effective when treating various pelvic floor related problems.
