Intercourse after having a baby

This can sometimes be a little scary or daunting, especially if a woman has had tearing or stitches in her vagina.

Many women are often scared that sex will hurt. It's important to resume sex only once you feel ready. It's quite normal to feel apprehensive about resuming sex after giving birth, however most of the time it really does sort itself out. Lets be honest most people we know tend to have more than one child.

Here's a few tips to make the experience less daunting and more enjoyable:

  • Try having sex when you're feeling relaxed, possibly on the weekend or when you have more time, perhaps during the day and not at night when you are very tired.

  • If you are very tense this can cause contraction of the pelvic floor muscles which can make intercourse more difficult and possibly painful, so make sure you take your time and feel ready.

  • Use lubrication. Often due to hormonal changes of pregnancy/breastfeeding it can affect natural lubrication. Using a lubricant or oil such as almond oil can make the experience a lot more comfortable.

  • Speak openly about what you're feeling with your partner and what their expectations are. This often helps reduce anxiety and relaxes you both mentally and physically.
