Chronic Constipation and how it can be treated with Physiotherapy

Chronic constipation affects millions of people worldwide.

One of the causes may be due to "pelvic floor dyssinergia" which means that the pelvic floor muscles around the anus contract instead of relaxing during bowel movements leading to symptoms of constipation, incomplete emptying and straining for bowel movements.

With help of physiotherapy, a patient can be taught how to use their pelvic floor muscles' correctly, thus preventing and treating constipation.

Physiotherapy treatment for chronic constipation includes: muscle retraining, trigger point release, pelvic floor muscle massage, muscle strengthening and or stretching, biofeedback therapy and home exercise program.
